Christmas Dinner at Orchid Live Seafood at Jalan Kelulut


Glass door of Orchid Live Seafood were pasted with photos of many celebrities that visited the restaurant.

I am trying to catch up with my food blog while right now I am having my staycation with my girl friend at Ritz Carlton for our 2nd year anniversary. Anyway, we visited this restaurant on the Christmas day after a night of great BBQ and gathering with my friends (only few though) on the day before. We were trying to get a simple dinner at Serangoon Gardens but most of the restaurants were closed due to Christmas and Chomp Chomp Hawker just does not appeal to me. Instead we loitered around Serangoon area before reaching Jalan Kelulut for Orchid Live Seafood. I have visited this restaurant about two years ago, before I started off with my food blog so I decided to visit again also for the purpose of introducing and reviewing Orchid Live Seafood.

The restaurant sits along a line of shophouses that are surrounded by semi-dettached bungalows . It was quiet without much people around, perhaps the dinner crowd has dispersed since it was already past nine. We went ahead for the restaurant and they were still opened for business. On their menu, they offered set meals but we though the portion might be too much for us and though we choose a la carte instead.


Lobster Porridge. Price: $ 60.00.

Lobster porridge is one of their signature dish at the restaurant which I think all has to really try it. As my girl friend does not really like to have carps for dinner, we intended to ordered a one person portion but the minimum order for the porridge is at least three lobsters (about 600 grams). The “porridge” is actually cooked with the broth, lobster and steam rice boiled together which is more like a Mui Fan instead of normal porridge. The broth itself is tasty and with the lobsters, it makes a very good seafood soup. With all the rice being cooked together with the soup, it is easy to down the carps down your throat and at the same time enjoy the freshness and taste of the soup and lobster.


Nai Bai. Price: $ 8.00 for small size.

We needed some fibres to go with our lobster soup and thus went on to ordered the Nai Bai. Nai Bai is a type of Pak Choy (or commonly known as Milk Cabbage). They stir-fried the vegetables with Ikan Bilis (Anchovies) and garlic. The dish is lightly salted and compliment well with our lobster porridge. The vegetables are crunchy and juicy that you can’t just stop chewing it.


Hot Plate Otah with Egg. Price: $ 10.00

We did not really expect to find Otah in the menu on a restaurant like this, but they did ! My girl friend had a really bad craving for Just Good Food’s Otah, but the catering shop is missing ! This dish was quite an eye opener because it is unusual to have Otah cooked with egg and on a hot plate. The egg were cracked and left on the hot plate to cook by itself while two large piece of Otah loaded on top of it. The eggs were not being seasoned but the Otah alone, bring out the unique taste of the dish.

Conclusion

The entire meal cost us about an average of S$ 43.00 per person. Main portion of the cost comes from the lobster porridge while the rest of the dish are considered of average price. The quality of food is definitely up to standards so even though it is slightly above average spending, it was worth it.

Dinner at Satay by the Bay

After a disappointed High Tea at Vivocity’s Max Brenner, we decided to have our light dinner elsewhere. Given consideration that one of my friends is from Japan and we should have bring him to a unique place for dinner. Hence, Satay by the Bay. No thoughts of what food to eat, but if we are talking about local delicacies, then it should be Satay and Zi Char. I was starving since this was my first meal of the day.

Otah

For the appetitizers, we ordered the Otah (fish meat cake wrapped inside banana leaves). Normally, it should taste a little spicy and you can smell the aroma of banana leaves. However, the Otah which we ordered missed the mark totally. In fact, it was quite sweet and the texture of the meat wasn’t that firm. Though the banana leaf is barbecue till charred, a small portion of the meat was not cooked fully and tasted a bit weird.

Sri Geylang Stall’s Satay

We ordered the Satay from Sri Geylang Satay Stall and they took a little long before to deliver the satay to us, which I believed that they actually missed our order.

The satay came in hot and looks good.  Each stick has large chuck of meat cubes string onto it and the spicy peanut sauce looks unusually red. The meat is tender and the sauce was indeed much more spicy, but not with less peanut chunks inside the sauce.

Lastly, we ordered some “Zi Char” from Boon Tat BBQ Seafood. Pandan Chicken, Bean Sprouts and Fried Baby Squid. There is only one word I can described after eating these, disappointment. Seriously, we are serving these to the tourists coming all the way from another side of the world just to taste these food ? Ridiculous. Even the rice which they have served was cold and hard. Perhaps they thought that foreigners does not know how to appreciate rice at all.

This is the chicken. Given it appearance, it is not that appealing to the stomach, well indeed it is not. Seriously, this is really hard to describe so I will give it a pass. Try it at your own risk.

I was quite puzzled that I made an order for fried bean sprouts and baby squids, but both turned out to be cold and soggy.
